May Crowning: Make a Silk Flower Crown for Mary

May is a beautiful month, filled with spring, flowers, and honoring mothers. Fittingly, the Catholic Church dedicates all of May to our Heavenly Mother and then celebrates the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin on the last day of the month.

With this in mind, I recently made a simple silk flower crown with my children so that we could honor the Blessed Virgin with a May crowning, in true Catholic tradition. Jesus loves to see His mother honored, and what a beautiful lesson for children!

My children loved this project, so I thought I would share it for others who might also want to make a flower crown for a May crowning. This is a very easy project and only takes a few supplies and a few steps. It would be a great homeschooling religion/art project.

Little ones will be excited to help choose flowers, twist some wire, and then have the privilege of crowning Our Lady with the lovely, finished crown.

What you will need:

Silk flowers

I had a few sprigs of silk purple/blue wisteria:

You can find silk flowers easily at a Dollar Store, Walmart, Joann, Michael’s,  Amazon, etc. Just be sure to take into account how big or small your Mary statue is.

Also, look for small blossoms connected all down the length of a stem, or even a garland/vine, so you don’t have to bother connecting/wiring individual flowers.

Wire Cutters

Something like this:

Green Floral Wire

You’ll want it flexible enough so you can twist it easily.

What to do:

Use the wire cutters to cut a length, or lengths, of silk flower stem, depending on the size crown you need.

Starting at one end of the flower sprig, wrap wire tightly around and between blossoms to form a crown shape. Connect floral sprigs with the wire if needed.

Adjust the crown to size on the head of your Mary statue before you securely twist the wire ends together where they meet.

And there you go!
